1 – 2 January 1940

The first two days of the year are relatively calm. The detachment at Saint-Inglevert was allowed to rest, while a section of the A Flight (Flying Officer Peter Collard and John RH Gayner, Pilot Officer Petrus H. Hugo) was sent to Abbeville for ten days to participate at a training alongside No.2 and 26 (RAF) Squadron.

A minor incident occurred on 2 January when Pilot Officer David J. Looker and Thomas C. Jackson were forced into a forced landing at dusk on the Miles Magister after a flight to Saint-Inglevert. No damage or injury, however, should be reported.

On the radar of the good news, during an inspection visit to Vitry-en-Artois, Undersecretary of State for Air Harold H. Balfour and Air Vice-Marshall Sholto Douglas, announcing the upcoming transformation of No.615 (County of Surrey) Squadron onto Hawker Hurricane. Pilots will, however, have to wait until the beginning of April to begin transformations on this more modern aircraft than the Gloster Gladiator.

Finally, the unit receives the support of a new pilot in the person of Pilot Officer Horace E. Horne. He is assigned to the A Flight. This Canadian pilot is, once again, relatively inexperienced.
